Why Can’t Trump’s America Be Like Italy?

By Paul Krugman
The New York Times, 23 July 2020
A few days ago The Times published a long, damning article about how the Trump administration managed to fail so completely in responding to the coronavirus. Much of the content confirmed what anyone following the debacle suspected. One thing I didn’t see coming, however, was the apparently central role played by Italy’s experience.
Italy, you see, was the first Western nation to experience a major wave of infections. Hospitals were overwhelmed; partly as a result, the initial death toll was terrible. Yet cases peaked after a few weeks and began a steep decline. And White House officials were seemingly confident that America would follow a similar track.
We didn’t. U.S. cases plateaued for a couple of months, then began rising rapidly. Death rates followed with a lag. At this point we can only look longingly at Italy’s success in containing the coronavirus: Restaurants and cafes are open, albeit with restrictions, much of normal life has resumed, yet Italy’s current death rate is less than a 10th of America’s. On a typical recent day, more than 800 Americans but only around a dozen Italians died from Covid-19.
Although Donald Trump keeps boasting that we’ve had the best coronavirus response in the world, and some credulous supporters may actually believe him, my guess is that many people are aware that our handling of the virus has fallen tragically short compared with, say, that of Germany. It may not seem surprising, however, that German discipline and competence have paid off (although we used to think that we were better prepared than anyone else to deal with a pandemic). But how can America be doing so much worse than Italy?

I don’t mean to peddle facile national stereotypes. For all its problems, Italy is a serious and sophisticated country, not a comic-opera stage set. Still, Italy entered this pandemic with major disadvantages compared with the United States.

After all, Italy’s bureaucracy isn’t famed for its efficiency, nor are its citizens known for their willingness to follow rules. The nation’s government is deeply in debt, and this debt matters because Italy doesn’t have its own currency; this means that it can’t do what we do, and print lots of money in a crisis.
Unfavorable demography and economic troubles are also major Italian disadvantages. The ratio of seniors to working-age adults is the highest in the Western world. Italy’s growth record is deeply disappointing: Per capita G.D.P. has stagnated for two decades.
When it came to dealing with Covid-19, however, all these Italian disadvantages were outweighed by one huge advantage: Italy wasn’t burdened with America’s disastrous leadership.

After a terrible start, Italy quickly moved to do what was necessary to deal with the coronavirus. It instituted a very severe lockdown, and kept to it. Government aid helped sustain workers and businesses through the lockdown. The safety net had holes in it, but top officials tried to make it work; in a supreme case of non-Trumpism, the prime minister even apologized for delays in aid.
And, crucially, Italy crushed the curve: It kept the lockdown in place until cases were relatively few, and it was cautious about reopening.
America could have followed the same path. In fact, the Covid-19 trajectory in the Northeast, which was hard-hit in the beginning but took the outbreak seriously, actually does look a lot like Italy’s.
But the Trump administration and its allies pushed for rapid reopening, ignoring warnings from epidemiologists. Because we didn’t do what Italy did, we didn’t crush the curve; quite the opposite. Matters were made worse by pathological opposition to things like wearing masks, the way even obvious precautions became battlegrounds in the culture wars.
So cases and then deaths surged. Even the promised economic payoff from rapid, what-me-worry reopening was a mirage: many states are reimposing partial lockdowns, and there is growing evidence that the jobs recovery is stalling, if not going into reverse.
Incredibly, Trump and his allies seem to have given no thought at all about what to do if the overwhelming view of experts was right, and their gamble on ignoring the coronavirus didn’t pan out. A miraculous boom was Plan A; there was no Plan B.

In particular, tens of millions of workers are about to lose crucial unemployment benefits, and Republicans haven’t even settled on a bad response. On Wednesday Senate Republicans floated the idea of reducing supplemental benefits from $600 a week to just $100, which would spell disaster for many families.
For someone like Trump, all this must be humiliating — or would be if anyone dared tell him about it. After three and a half years of Making America Great Again, we’ve become a pathetic figure on the world stage, a cautionary tale about pride going before a fall.
These days Americans can only envy Italy’s success in weathering the coronavirus, its rapid return to a kind of normalcy that is a distant dream in a nation that used to congratulate itself for its can-do culture. Italy is often referred to as “the sick man of Europe”; what does that make us?

Th Boys in the Band's 50th Anniversary

The Boys in the Band, one of the first plays to portray gay life, opened off-Broadway in 1968 and became a film in 1970, directed by William Friedkin. As the LGBTQ rights movement grew, the work received criticism for depicting gay and bisexual men as self-loathing, but it was groundbreaking for its time.
Written by Mart Crowley, Boys first premiered off-Broadway in 1968, and a film version featuring its cast was released in 1970. The 2018 revival, marking its 50th anniversary, was staged at the Booth Theatre in New York City for a 15-week run that broke sales records.
The Broadway play — a revival of the 1968 gay classic about a queer dinner party that goes off the rails — was produced with an all-star cast of out actors. The production won a Tony for Best Revival of a Play, and is being adapted into a film by Netflix and produced by Ryan Murphy.
While some of the content of Boys felt dated to some viewers — particularly the portrayal of the intense self-hatred of queer men in that era — other themes of stigma resonated with modern-day audiences. The groundbreaking play has undoubtedly retained its power.
Crowley was a well-known Hollywood raconteur and friend to many stars, including Natalie Wood, who encouraged him to write The Boys in the Band. He wrote several other plays, including a sequel, The Men From the Boys, and worked on the television series Hart to Hart.
"The Broadway cast of Boys was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley's seminal work," Murphy wrote in the caption of the Instagram post. "Everyone in the cast was out and proud...and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart's landmark play." (Source: The Advocate)

Years and Years_series

An ordinary British family contends with the hopes, anxieties and joys of an uncertain future in this six-part limited series that begins in 2019 and propels the characters 15 years forward into an unstable world. The story begins as members of the Lyons clan converge for the birth of the newest family member, baby Lincoln, and an outspoken celebrity begins her transformation into a political figure whose controversial opinions will divide the nation. As the Britain of this imaginary drama is rocked by political, economic and technological advances, the family experiences everything hoped for in the future, and everything that is feared.
Years and Years is an HBO, must-see series. As captivating as Black Mirror. Take my word for it.

1985_film

This heart-wrenching film by Yen Tan released in 2018 is already a classic. Unmissable.

Green Kayak

The world has a plastic problem - and it’s floating around in our oceans. Scientists estimate there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the seas. If we don’t do anything, litter particles could outnumber fish by 2050. Not if GreenKayak has anything to do with it, though. This rapidly growing, Danish-run NGO is encouraging people to remove litter from the water – by turning it into a fun activity.

The idea started by accident back in 2017, when Tobias Weber-Andersen, a keen diver, windsurfer and sailor, had had enough of encountering trash in the water and decided to do something about it. At that time he was the owner of a kayakrental company on Copenhagen harbour, so he designated one of his kayaks a “miljøkajakken” (“environmental kayak”), offering it to people for free, in return for all the litter they could collect.

“We started at the beginning of the summer season in Denmark and right away it was fully booked,” Weber-Andersen remembers. “Over the first five months we had almost 1,000 people using it and collected more than three tonnes of trash. We saw that and said, ‘Woah! Let’s do this even more.’”

Two years on, GreenKayak is now his full-time job, and this year the charity expanded outside Denmark for the first time – with “host” schemes in Hamburg, Bergen, Stockholm, Berlin and Dublin. “Last year we had just three kayaks in Denmark,” says Weber-Andersen, “while now there are 38 in five different countries,” saving more than 17 tonnes of waste to date. “It’s really working.”

Wannabe watery eco-warriors simply book the use of a kayak – online at greenkayak.org or directly with one of the hosts – for two free hours of use. As the sit-on-top boats are “very safe and very easy to steer”, even accompanied kids can join in. All tools are provided, “and all the rubbish in the water has been washed clean so people don’t get their hands dirty”.

Participants honour their side of the bargain by picking up litter from the water, and by posting on social media afterwards using #greenkayak – both things people seem very happy to do. “We thought we might have to take a deposit but it wasn’t needed,” says Weber-Anderson, full of praise for the honest and eager response. “Everyone participates. Some people even come back with a full basket and then go get some more.”

Thanks to the social-media drive, he now has a long list of hosts who want to bring the GreenKayak concept to their own shores. After fielding calls “from the US, Asia, Australia,” his ambition to “make GreenKayak global” is clearly in sight. Better still, he finally feels like he’s doing something to help the natural world by providing others with the tools they need to help, too.

“It fills me with hope when I see volunteers pulling trash from the water,” he says. “They’re showing the world that tackling environmental pollution is fun and easy to do.”

B2 Compound Adjectives

Compound adjectives that express the idea of with or having often end in -ed. For example, a a guy with blue eyes is a blue-eyed guy. These -ed endings are often known as "false participles":

A cat with one leg is a one-legged cat. (Here notice the pronunciation and spelling of "legged".)
A girl with black hair and green eyes = a black-haired, green-eyed girl.
A robber with one eye = a one-eyed robber.
A model with long legs = a long-legged model.

Compound adjectives with expressions of time, quantity, weight, distance or measurement do not use the plural s in the noun of the compound:

A journey that lasts 12 hours is a 12-hour journey. (Note that "hour" is singular.)
A baby that weighs seven pounds = a seven-pound baby.
A walk of 20 miles = a 20-mile walk.
A holiday that lasts 2 weeks = a 2-week holiday.
